The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vigan is 400 kilometers from Manila. Vigan is the Capital city of Ilocos Sur and located on the west coast of northern Luzon. The remnants of old Spanish architecture can be seen all through the center of the city. Originally established in the 16th century, Vigan is well preserved and a prime example of planned Spanish colonial town in Asia making it a unique European atmosphere. The national heroes that were born in Vigan Ilocos Sur are remembered in the many museums that are open. Vigan boasts its status as the oldest surviving Spanish colonial city in the Philippines. The giant taro plant that is abundant along the Mestizo River banks is where Vigan gained its name.

Baluarte calls Vigan City home and is not just a zoo, but an interactive wildlife sanctuary and facility with its wildlife and scenic landscape. It is dedicated to educating, conservation and protection on endangered species and wildlife.
