What to do in Corregidor
Corregidor has become a tourist destination and known as a historical site. Divided into sections, the island’s “head” is called the “Topside” by locals. Located on the “Topside” is the headquarters, war memorial, barracks, lighthouse, parade grounds, Eternal Flame, golf course and all the major emplacements. On the “Middleside” there is the aviary, bird park, campsite and some ruins. San Jose Chapel, Gen. Wainwright Park, Gen. MacArthur Park, the administrative building, and the hotel are found on the “Bottomside” or tail of the island.
Serving as a memorial the Filipino and American soldiers who died on Corregidor many of the ruined buildings have never been reconstructed. Relaxing and enjoying the ambiance, as well as learning and reflecting on the history are favorite pastimes of visitors. With so many sights and activities it will take more than one visit to do and see them all. A focal point of a visit to Corregidor would be the audio-visual production that is done at the Malinta Tunnel, which depicts the events that occurred at the island during World War II. This includes the departure of President Quezon and Gen. Douglas MacArthur on a submarine to Australia from Corregidor. President Quezon and his family were exiled to the US during the War.
Tours of the island can be taken via motorized boat or hike through the forest and hills to discover some of the island’s landmark ruins. For the truly adventurous there are night tours with a walk around the Malinta Tunnel, which is stimulating and breathtaking.
